MELBOURNE Victory defender Pablo Contreras has officially retired.

The 35-year-old, who was Victory’s international marquee this season, had flagged his intention to hang up the boots in an interview with Chilean media in January.

But a strong finish to the season prompted speculation he might play on in 2014-15 on a reduced contract under the club’s salary cap.

However, Victory chief executive Ian Robson confirmed that would not be the case.

“I am aware that he spoke to the playing group after the loss to Brisbane to say that that was it, that was his last game,” Robson said.

“We’ll certainly acknowledge Pablo and his family and the commitment he’s given to this club at the Victory Medal night next week.”

Victory also confirmed that Jimmy Jeggo is leaving the club. The midfielder is set to play for Adelaide United next season.

United coach Josep Gombau said in a statement: “James is the type of player that suits the style and football philosophy of this club.

“He’s a player that can help out the team, and from the first time I saw him play, I liked him straight away.

“I like the way that he plays, because he’s a player that is always thinking in attack but also he’s strong in defending.

“For me, it’s important that he’s a young player, one that is hungry to play, who also has a strong future ahead of him.”

Victory’s talks with Archie Thompson, Gui Finkler and Adama Traore are ongoing according to Robson, with Thompson’s deal understood to be closer to being struck than the other two.

Robson also said new international marquee Besart Berisha — who will line-up for Brisbane Roar in Sunday’s A-League grand final — is at this stage due to start pre-season training along with his new Victory teammates in early to mid-July.

The band is back together for a grand final edition of the Fox Football Podcast — with a few special guests dropping in as well. Adam Peacock, Simon Hill and Brenton Speed are in the studio, where they are joined by Wanderers fanatic Ian ‘Dicko’ Dickson, who dropped by for a chat too, and on the line by Brisbane Roar defender Jade North. Daniel Garb is on deck again to talk Mourinho, Liverpool, City and all things EPL & Socceroos.
