Woman accused of dumping her quadriplegic son in the woods of a Philadelphia park for five days so she could visit her boyfriend in Maryland has been found competent to stand trial.

A woman accused of dumping her quadriplegic son in the woods of a Philadelphia park for five days so she could visit her boyfriend in Maryland has been found competent to stand trial.

The ruling Friday came after a psychiatrist said Nyia Parler nonetheless needs mental health treatment. Parler is being held on $2.5 million bail until an August preliminary hearing.

Authorities say Parler abandoned her 21-year-old son in April before taking a bus to visit her boyfriend.

Police say the son had no food or water during the cold, rainy ordeal. The son was treated at a hospital and has been released.

Parler is charged with attempted murder, neglect of a care-dependent person and other crimes. Her lawyer hasn't returned a call seeking comment on her case.
