"When it comes to the Supreme Court, I'm very happy that they made the right decision on that, because we, in California, we're always a step ahead. We made the decision already a long time ago," Schwarzenegger, 67, said during a press conference for Terminator: Genesys in Los Angeles on Friday.
"Everyone has equal rights. So this is the right way to go, and I think it's a great celebration of America," he continued.
The 5-4 ruling provoked a backlash from the minority, who accused the court of usurping the will of individual states, where many same-sex marriage bans were still in place.
Schwarzenegger, who served as California governor from 2003 to 2011, didn't agree with this view.
"Sometimes, I have to say that the judges and judiciary system makes better decisions than the politicians," he told PEOPLE. "Sadly, that they are not having the balls sometimes to lead and work together on those issues."
