The cash value of this evening's drawing was an estimated $930 million for those opting for the lump-sum payout, although the final prize may end up being higher following a flurry of last-minute ticket-buying.
A $2 ticket gives you a one in 292,201,338 shot of matching five numbers and the Powerball. Those odds are now far worse than they had been before October, when your chances were one in about 175 million, thanks to a change in the game's rules that added 10 more digits, among other tweaks.
But the game also pays out other, smaller prizes. In the last drawing, 29 New Jersey residents won $50,000 apiece after picking four numbers and the Powerball.
Ticket sales have been brisk. New Jersey Lottery retailers sold $15,517,572 on Tuesday, New Jersey Lottery spokeswoman Judy Drucker said. On Monday, lottery players bought $9,230,546 in tickets; sales figures on Sunday totaled $4,608,282, according to Drucker.
No one has hit the Powerball jackpot since a $144.1 million ticket was sold in Tennessee for the Nov. 4 drawing. The jackpot reset to $40 million for the next drawing three days later and is now more than 36 times as large after being rolled over 19 consecutive times.
Powerball is played in 44 states as well as Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Before Saturday's $949.8 million Powerball drawing, the previous largest U.S. lottery jackpot was a $656 million Mega Millions drawing in March 2012. Winning tickets for that drawing were sold in Illinois, Kansas and Maryland.
In New Jersey, the largest prize won by a single ticket holder is the $338 million Powerball jackpot hit by Pedro Quazada of Passaic in March 2013.
And if you should find yourself with the magic combination of digits, what next? First, Drucker has said previously, sign the back of that ticket! This, she has said, is vitally important. Here are a few other tips on what to do immediately if you found yourself the recipient of an instant fortune.
