The heroic professor who helped uncover the Flint lead water crisis​ has been asked to fix it - Marc Edwards is largely funding this effort out of his own pocket. He received a small $33,000 emergency grant from the National Science Foundation, but he's spent almost $150,000.

I had the opportunity to do research with this guy last year and passed on it...

Well that's one of the worst decisions I've made in my life.

edit: in case anyone's wondering why I didn't. I was in a STEM class last year where we got to hear seminars from quite a few speakers. And honestly this guy came off as paranoid. His seminar was about how his work in the DC water scandal was constantly being covered up and how he was fired as he got close to the truth. It all sounded so fantastic... turns out this dude is paranoid because he actually is uncovering some real shit! I ultimately ended up not participating in any research that semester and his research faded from memory. I now do research at a nearby university that is incredibly fascinating (though likely not as important as Dr. Edwards' work).
