Nine people were arrested after Black Lives Matter activists demonstrated on the 405 Freeway near LAX on Wednesday afternoon, temporarily shutting down all southbound lanes of the busy roadway, according to police and the Los Angeles Times.

The incident began shortly before 1:30 p.m. on the 405 between Manchester and Century boulevards, according to CHP Officer Peter Bishop.

The demonstration lasted about 25 minutes before the roadway was fully reopened, according to CHP Officer Ramberto Salcido. He confirmed the arrests, but was unsure of the charges they faced.

It was not immediately clear how many people were involved in the incident, but Bishop initially estimated that 5 people were blocking the southbound lanes.

The L.A. Times reported that the protesters were affiliated with the Black Lives Matter movement. Activist Pete White told the newspaper they carried a banner onto the freeway and wrote messages in chalk.

Around 1:30 p.m., the group sent out an email demanding an end to the killing of black people by law enforcement agencies and a boycott to corporations who support or do nothing to end it.

"On one of the busiest travel days of the year, Black Lives Matter is calling for a halt on Christmas as usual in memorial of all of the loved ones we have lost and continue to lose this year to law enforcement violence without justice or recourse," the email stated.

Demonstrations were taking place in five other cities across the U.S., according to the email.

The temporary shutdown of the freeway came on what is expected to be one of the busiest travel days of the year.
