(RNN) - A trendsetting Texas theater began a policy that is becoming standard in theaters around the nation. The Alamo Drafthouse in Austin doesn't allow children under the age of 6 to attend R-rated films after 6 p.m.

Theater managers say the often receive complaints from customers about loud or restless kids, and other customers don't like the idea of children that young seeing violent or sexual content.

Regal, the nation's largest chain of theaters, has taken an extra step and doesn't allow kids 6 and under into R-rated movies at all.

AMC and Cinemark, the second and third-largest circuits are still using the "no 6 after 6" policy for now.

The policy tightens the current MPAA code, whose R-rating means children under 17 be accompanied by a parent or adult.

Operators said any money lost at the box office is worth not having to hear complaints from so many other customers.
