WHITE CLOUD, Mich. (WZZM) -- The Newaygo County Sheriff is responding to concerns over a video posted on social media involving one of his deputies and an illegal ticket and arrest quota.
The deputy attended a Newaygo County Commission meeting to seek permission to accept a grant from the Office of Highway Safety Planning. The money was to be used for specialized drunk driving enforcement. During his presentation to the commissioners, the deputy made statements about requiring officers to "turn in numbers" at the end of their shifts.
The policy of requiring quotas for tickets and arrests is against Michigan law.
In a release sent to the media, Sheriff Patrick Hedlund said, "After watching the video I immediately took action and this employee was disciplined internally according to the progressive discipline protocol as outlined in his union contract and department policy."
As the new Sheriff of Newaygo County, Hedlund said he also inquired whether a quota for tickets and arrests was policy of the agency in the past and he was told it was not. "The public should rest assured that if I discover any instance of 'quotas' or any other wrong doing, I will immediately forward the matter to an outside agency for criminal investigation."
