NAMPA, Idaho -- A Nampa mom is concerned about her son after he told her two kids took his hearing aids out and threw them in the pond at their apartment complex.
Since he was just 6 years old, special hearing aids have helped Koltin Glover be a kid.
"He doesn't have any difficulty hearing volumes, he actually just has difficulty hearing different pitches and tones," said his mom, Amy Glover. "So in the English language different letters of the alphabet automatically make different tones when you speak them, so there's certain letters of the alphabet that he just doesn't hear."
His audiologist specially programs them to help him hear the different tones. However, Koltin said something happened to them Tuesday while he played outside.
"I was hanging on the monkey bars and then another kid who was on the monkey bars took my hearing aids out," said Koltin. "And then the other kid who was on the monkey bars dared the kid with my hearing aids to thrown them in the pond."
"And another little boy ran up and picked that one up off the bank of the pond and made sure it got in the water as well," said Amy Glover.
The aids were completely submerged in the water, but Amy put them in a special container to try and dry them. Still, she said chances are slim that they can be salvaged. And, they weren't under warranty since they were refurbished, not bought new.
"I cried for hours because I have no way of replacing them," Glover said. "I'm a single mom on one income with four children. It's just not any possible way for me to afford them."
The hearing aids are $5,000, and the insurance won't cover a new pair until 2016. Koltin can borrow a pair while he is at school, but he can't take them home after school, on weekends, or on school breaks. This worries Amy because he already had to go without his aids when their family fell on hard times.
"We actually went one year without him having aids and he went from being in the 95th percentile for development all the way down to the 50th in one year," she said. "So at this age, with him just starting school it is so important to his development that he has his aids."
Amy started a gofundme page to help raise money for new hearing aids for Koltin.
