White House on lockdown after reported shooting on West Executive Drive

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- A uniformed Secret Service agent shot a man outside the White House complex after the man displayed a gun and ignored commands to surrender, according to authorities.

CBS News has identified the suspect as Jesse Oliveri of Pennsylvania.

Oliveri is at a nearby hospital in critical condition after they were shot near 17th Street and E Street NW, according to D.C. Fire and EMS.

Around 3:06 p.m., the Secret Service says the man was armed with a gun when approached a perimeter checkpoint that is publicly accessible via E Street.

After the suspect ignored commands to drop the gun, he was shot once by a Secret Service agent and taken into custody, according to authorities. A gun was also recovered at the scene.

CBS' Jeff Pegues reports the man was still alive when taken into custody and made statements suggesting that he had wanted to die in a kind of suicide-by-cop.

The White House was placed on lockdown in the moments after the shooting was reported. The lockdown has since been lifted.

All Secret Service protectees are safe, according to the Secret Service.

President Obama was playing golf at Joint Base Andrews at the time of the shooting, according to CBS News. Vice President Joe Biden was inside the White House at the time of the shooting, but was taken to a secure location.

There are multiple road closures in the area of the White House, including Pennsylvania Avenue NW. Traffic is backed up in and around the White House.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
