9-Year-Old Shot Dead in Ferguson While Sitting in Bed Doing Her Homework

A 9-year-old girl was shot and killed Tuesday in Ferguson, Missouri, while she sat in bed doing her homework, her family says.

"I never in a million years thought that I'd be laying my daughter to rest," said James Bolden, 9-year-old Jamyla's father, KMOV reports.

Jamyla's 34-year-old mother was also shot in the leg, but has since been released from the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

As of Wednesday night, police had no suspect in the attack, though investigators believe that the shots were fired from close range into the home, which is one block from West Florissant Ave., the center for protests in Ferguson after Michael Brown's shooting death a year ago at the hands of Officer Darren Wilson.

Jamyla's grandmother, who owns the home where the shooting occurred, told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that she held her young granddaughter as she died.

"I still have her blood on my hands. She was still breathing. I was telling her to just breathe," the grandmother said, declining to give her name because she feared for her safety.

The child's father urged anyone with information to come forward. "Do it for a 9-year-old child that didn't even get to see the rest of the world," James Bolden told KMOV.

In a news release, Ferguson Chief Andre Anderson said officials will "do everything possible to find the person responsible."
