CONYERS, GA (CBS46) -

A Conyers police dog died Thursday night after being left in his handler's patrol car.

Zane, a 5-year-old bloodhound, was found dead around 5 p.m. at Jerahmy Williams' home in Rockdale County.

According to police, the dog had been in the car for nearly 10 hours. Williams said after getting off of work at 6 a.m. he fell asleep after feeling sick. He thought he had taken Zane to the kennel but then realized he had left him in the car. Police chief Gene Wilson believes it was an accident.

"That sure is heartbreaking. I love that old dog. He was a fine police dog," said Roy Bundrick, a friend of Williams.

Williams has been with the police department for nearly five years and is a patrol corporal.

Zane had worked as a tracking dog for Conyers police for four years, three of those with Williams.

"We are committed to the care and proper treatment of our working K-9s. We are mourning the loss of our own," said chief Wilson.

Williams is currently on administrative leave with pay pending the outcome of an internal investigation. Possible charges Williams could be facing include reckless conduct and cruelty to animals.
