On Wednesday, lawmakers in California have pushed forward a new bill which will require that all school-aged children in the state receive vaccinations. The measure is quite likely a result of urging of both parents and doctors, as well as activist Robert Kennedy, Jr.
The new proposal, basically, would not allow unvaccinated children to attend school, even with a waiver citing spiritual grounds. In fact, the only exemptions that would be available would be for children who have particular health problems aggravated by or sensitive certain vaccines.
While most are in favor of the legislation there are, of course, some detractors. Opponents argue that vaccines also carry inherent risks as well.
At a public forum, for example, Karen Kain cited that her daughter had died of injuries from a vaccine tainted by mercury. She says, "I stand here today before you to share my story so you can all see and hear what happens when vaccines go wrong. Who gets to make the choice now of whose babies are more important? Because there is risk, there must be choice."
Senator Kennedy chimes in, "The checks and balances in our democratic system that are supposed stand between corporate power and our little children have been removed. And there's only one barrier left and that's the parents."
Furthermore, pediatrician Dr. Dean Blumberg comments, "Unfortunately, there's much misinformation about vaccine safety and effectiveness." Dr. Blumberg testified for the American Academy of Pediatrics as well as the California Medical Association comments that childhood vaccinations have been very successful, relating how easy it is to overstate the risks they pose and, inversely, dismiss the diseases they successfully prevent.
He goes on to say, "Let me be clear: There is no scientific controversy about vaccine safety and vaccine effectiveness. … This is not open to dispute among mainstream doctors and scientists."
Indeed, this is generally a dispute between parents.
