School district cancels Halloween, parents outraged. "arose out of numerous incidents of children being excluded from activities due to religion, cultural beliefs, etc"

MILFORD, Conn. —

A Connecticut school district is playing the politically correct card and is canceling Halloween.

So kids don't feel left out, Milford Public Schools officials have decided to ban Halloween parades, The Connecticut Post reported.

But that's not the only change to the annual tradition.

A letter sent home to families said the district is not allowing students or staff to wear Halloween costumes during the day. Classrooms can only be decorated in fall themes, not Halloween, The Connecticut Post reported.

The letter stated the controversial change "arose out of numerous incidents of children being excluded from activities due to religion, cultural beliefs, etc."

Parents are not happy with the decision.

"I think it's crazy," Victoria Johannsen, a mother of a third grader, said. "I don't understand why other avenues weren't pursued."

More than 350 people have signed a petition at Change.org to have the school reinstate the parade.

"Everything has gotten to the point where everything has gotten so P.C. that kids are not allowed to have any fun any more," Heather Sharpe said.

School district officials said that respecting the district's diversity is a key concern.

"Milford Public Schools do have many children from diverse beliefs, cultures and religions," Jim Richetelli, chief operations officer said.

Richetelli said there are seasonal activities this year. The PTA is hosting a Trunk or Treat where children can wear their costumes and go from car to car collecting candy if they would like to take part.
